A strong earthquake was registered last night in the Irkutsk area. The Ministry of Extraordinary Situations reported that the first shock was registered at 3 a.m. local time and reached a magnitude of 7 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was situated under the Baikal Lake 50 km from Irkutsk. In Irkutsk the earthquake reached a magnitude of 5. Aftershocks, of lesser magnitude than the main quake, began a few minutes later. In all, there were about 20 shocks during the night.
No casualties or property damage were reported.
